Knowing where we are going
...................................................................................................................
Information is absolutely necessary and essential to ensure that passengers feel at ease inside the facilities and trains. The passengers are therefore able to know the status of the service at all times and can decide on alternative transport methods, in the event of any problems.

The signalling system that is currently installed in the stations was first implanted in 1991. Over the years the demands for improvement in services and facilities have made it necessary to adapt the original system to these new demands.

In 1992, coinciding with the celebration of the Olympic and Para-Olympic Games, the English language was included in some of the signalling elements. This need has become permanent, in view of the increase in foreign visitors who use public transport.

A fundamental change was introduced into the signalling elements in 1996, when the frequencies and services along the Barcelona-Terrassa and Barcelona-Sabadell lines were increased, leading to the creation of the metropolitan "Metro del Vallès" (Vallès Underground) network. This new operating method involved the incorporation of new identification codes for the services, depending on train times and destinations. Later, this system was introduced into the Llobregat-Anoia line, leading to the creation of the "Metro del Baix Llobregat" (Baix Llobregat Underground) network.

In the year 1994, new technologies were incorporated into the passenger information system. This new Passenger Information System (SIC) was first used on the Barcelona-Vallès line, through a series of screens installed in the halls and on the platforms, supplying information in real time on the status of the trains.

Did you know that in order to provide information in real time, the central Passenger Information System computer has to analyse the data on the times and provisional stops of the equivalent of 120 trains every 3 seconds, which means having to perform several millions of operations per second?
