The stations inherited in 1979 were very old, and in some cases, in poor condition. Construction work and the remodelling of new stations is often a fundamental aspect in the growth of new residential developments, urban expansion areas and squares in townships. Some of the new stations have won international prizes for their design and functionality.

Since the year 1979 the facilities have been modernised, in an effort to unite criteria and preserve the identity of the most charismatic elements, through rehabilitation. In other cases, installing stretches of line unerground and constructing new stations has led to an improvement in the standard of living in cities.

Today, the new stations are more comfortable and easy to move around in, with the latest technologies for issuing tickets (remote-controlled systems, effective fare barriers...) and their infrastructures have been adapted for disabled people (lifts, gradients and special passageways for the visually impaired). It is forecasted that by 2006, all the stations will have been adapted.
