With different track gauges, from the metric track gauge (1000 mm) to the international track width (1435 mm), time has given rise to significant changes in the lines in terms of track maintenance: the old wooden crosspieces have been replaced by concrete ones in most of the network.

The renovation and undergrounding of some track sections and the construction and dualling of other sections has led to a series of infrastructure work to provide cohesion to the network. This has made it possible to obtain many benefits for citizens: nowadays, the trains are much more comfortable and safer, many level crossings have been eliminated and noise levels reduced.

The electrifying of new track sections has permitted the incorporation of electrical trains throughout the whole of the network, which are more comfortable and faster, and reduce the pollution caused by diesel locomotive emissions.
